Interpreting SALIVA & URINE IODINE TESTING
PPM/ug/dl Note: 1 PPM = 100 ug/dL
IODINE ANALYZER RESIDUAL INTERPRETATION Initial test result; Saliva 0 to 3 PPM Urine 0 to 1 PPM Persons not supplementing, not eating sea vegetables or fish will test in this range. Urine at this low range means that the body is not dumping excess iodine but is holding on to all it can get. After 1 week supplementation: Saliva 0 to 10 PPM Urine 0 to 5 PPM No or little patient compliance or poor symporter action from the blood to the thyroid gland. If the mechanism is compromised,. a higher iodine dose from 37 to 100 PPM may repair the gland receptor. The body is retaining as much iodine as possible due to deficiency. |
After 1-4 week supplementation;
Saliva 11 to 50 PPM
Urine 6 to 12 PPM
Symporter is working correctly to deliver iodine to the thyroid. If the urine is less than 20 PPM, continue supplementation at 37 mg Lugol's per day.
Body is starting to dump iodine as the other competing halogens are displaced.
After long term supplementation;
Saliva 20 to 100 plus PPM
Urine 16 plus PPM
These are high values that are OK but do not convey any more useful information than lower values. Here the urine value is dominant. A high urine value is the body dumping the excess iodine it doesn't need. Sufficiency can be reached if the urine is 12 to 16 PPM. If there is a question of sufficiency, do a 24 hr urine collection if the subject will comply. Once these values are reached, reduce the supplementation to maintain sufficiency. Of course if there are other issues. continue as the practitioner deems appropriate.

DISCLAIMER 1. These values have not been evaluated by the FDA but are indirectly and independently supported by past and present studies. Dosing levels and possible adverse side effects from iodine supplementation should be understood by the practitioner and are not the responsibility of the manufacturer.
2. It is possible to see saliva readings as high as 600 if measured within 2 -3 hours after dosing. The salivary glands concentrate the iodine (similar to the thyroid) from 10 to 40 times the blood level. The level will decrease with time with no dosing. |
