EVIDENCE MOUNTS FOR GLUCOSAMINE

Glucosamine is  a normal  constituent of joints. It is part of the group of glucosamineglycans that are found in the joint space ( cartilage, synovial fluids,  etc.).  Glucosamine Sulfate is  the  sulfate derivative  of glucosamine,  and  it is  easily  made Into  a supplement in  a powder form.  As part of joint nutrition,  it is  now proven  to  be effective  in reversing the progression of osteoarthritis.

The  most  revered  scientific journal  in  the world is the Lancet. The January 27, 2001, issue of Lancet showed  the  same findings  we  have found with  patients  and  on x-rays- glucosamine  at  a daily dose of 1,500 mgs. maintained joint integrity and cartilage while the placebo had no  effect. In other words, people with  osteoarthritis  continued to  get worse  on  a placebo,  but those taking  the glucosamine supplement not only  did not worsen, they actually got better.
Just  as I  find  on  x-ray,  the  glucosamine patients  showed no loss  of cartilage or joint space in the  arthritic joint,  while  all  the placebo  patients did. It is one thing to ask a patient if he or she feels better. But it is another thing altogether to find cartilage maintenance on x-ray by measuring the joint space-the space between bones that is filled with cartilage. It is the breakdown of this cartilage that causes  arthritis.  Patients  on  glucosamine  do  not suffer cartilage breakdown.  Indeed, there is  even some cartilage regeneration.
So there you have it again. And unlike the arthritis drugs that are fraught with serious side effects, glucosamine  has  very  few  problems.
