Over-The-Counter Pain Relievers
“Lets face it, these drugs are fantastic at relieving pain. But the price is becoming too great- especially for chronic pain. Advil, (Motrin and Aleve) are now known to carry the same dangers as Vioxx and Celebrex. That means you might develop heart disease from using (these over-the-counter drugs) for chronic problems.”
Health Alert VoL 22. No. 3 The bad news is that we were right. The government is now considering a Box Warning (its Strongest warning) on all over-the-counter pain relievers such as Advil, Motrin and Aleve. For chronic pain, you will be left with just Tylenol and aspirin. Tylenol has its own sordid history of liver toxicity, (1) and aspirin causes internal bleeding. |
Once Vioxx was pulled from the market. I thought Celebrex would be yanked within a year. To my surprise Bextra has instead been pulled. I still suspect Celebrex will be removed from shelves soon. The Box Warning on all non-steroidal, antinflammatory drugs (NSAIDS) and the inherent dangers of Tylenol still leave pain sufferers high and dry.
NSAIDS are a large family of pain drugs that include naproxen, ibuprofen, and virtually all other over-the-counter pain relievers except Tylenol. Their dangers- are announced today and combined with the problems of Cox-2 drugs like Vioxx, Celebrex, and Bextra- have caused an amazing chain of events.
